New York

Three New Museums

There are moments when a city shifts and you feel it most in the spaces where art is encountered. That time is now in New York. And it is incredibly exciting!

On the Bowery, the expansion of The New Museum introduces new ways to move, gather, and spend time with work that is still unfolding. The building feels open to possibility, as though it is still becoming.

Uptown, the return of The Frick Collection brings you back into rooms where everything is more intimate—light, scale, and distance quietly guiding your attention. It asks for a different kind of looking, one that unfolds slowly.

And in Harlem, The Studio Museum in Harlem’s new building carries a sense of purpose that is both grounded and expansive. It feels shaped by the artists it supports and the community around it.

Having been part of opening two new museums, I am always aware of how much time and attention permeates these spaces long before anyone arrives. What I look for is how it feels to enter, where I want to pause, what draws me back without quite knowing why, and most importantly how the art looks! Are the galleries gracious to both object and visitor? Are there places to sit? Is it clear how to easily find the bathroom or get something to eat?

When you are in New York, take the time to experience all three. Move between them without rushing. Notice how your pace changes, how your attention shifts, how each space leaves a different impression. And let me know what you loved!
