I was recently in Palm Springs, a place I have been often and over many years, sometimes for tennis, mostly for horses, and every single time I think about art and specifically individual works I experienced placed with the iconic desert landscape as part of Desert X. (Neville Wakefield was the guest on the About Art Podcast in April 2023.)
I am continually fascinated by what I know about a place or a culture or a language through art. That curiosity about what something is, and why it is located where it is, is part of a visual literacy that can be cultivated and benefits living overall. And putting art somewhere where you can see it from a highway and have an experience which is equal to that when you’re in the object’s immediate presence is one of the best ways to increase the accessibility of art!
