Decisions

Timber Hawkeye wrote that we are all only one decision away from a totally different life. When I first read this a few years ago, I couldn’t fully understand it. Now, I do. Everyone knows what that decision is for them—whether it’s removing something from their lives (alcohol, a partner, a job) or adding something (a ritual, a new home, a life practice), the first step is making the decision. Hawkeye didn’t say any of this would be easy, but it’s about making that choice.

Quite awhile ago now, Dan Colen had an exhibition at Gagosian gallery in New York’s Chelsea district that, when I walked out of it, I hailed a cab and went uptown to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Something in that show made me feel soulless, and I wanted to see something different, to feel something different. I have said many times that the way we see art is a reflection of ourselves, and I now know that my response to Colen’s work that day was only about me. When I watched a video about his Sky High Farm and all the incredible, profound work he is doing, I was reminded of how much can happen from that one decision we can make to live a totally different life. I am now living a very different life. And I am grateful to be able to tell an updated story about a generous and serious artist.
