I find myself in a lot of conversations about purpose. The frequency of these conversations does not diminish but rather enhances their importance. Most people I know who have had the privilege of success (however that is defined) turn next to purpose. Questions include considering the service we still have to offer and how to play the game of life well, win or lose. The game has taken on a fierce sense of urgency now, and through the long arc of time, whatever purpose we find and whatever we choose to do, we must do so for the love of the game! This life is a privilege; seeing it as such promotes an engagement that brings us closer to purpose.
Cy Twombly often includes text, numbers, and repeated marks in his work. The notion of writing and rewriting, of something emerging and then being obscured, offers another way to consider purpose. His explorations often suggest that within uncertainty, beauty and meaning can even thrive. Life is not a linear, clean path toward purpose, but often circuitous and fraught with error and absurdity. Regardless, redemption and joyfulness remain achievable.
