This fall White Cube gallery presented an exhibition titled “Gunpowder and Abstraction 2015–2025” which included more than 30 works that covered a decade of experimentation with gunpowder and was Cai Guo-Qiang’s first show in London in two decades. While there is nothing like experiencing his explosion events in person, including most recently for me the “closing“ for the Centre Pompidou in Paris (October 22, 2025), the opening of PST exhibition at the USC stadium in Los Angeles (September 15, 2024) and of course our opening of the Aspen Art Museum with a black lightning work over Aspen mountain (August 2, 2014), to see that energy and dynamism beautifully and brilliantly captured and presented in two dimensions was mesmerizing. And, frankly, I traveled to London specifically to experience this exhibition, and I’m so grateful that I did!
