There is a difference between being invisible and being unseen. For
me, the latter involves choice on the part of the person choosing not
to see the other. People often unsee those they most love because they
mistakenly think they can. Being taken for granted gets old. And while
all things can be forgiven, some cannot be forgotten. Be conscious of
what you are choosing not to see.
Christine Sun Kim makes sound works and drawings, many of which
address the challenges of being seen as a person who cannot hear. She
has shared that hearing women indicate their identification with her
experiences. We can all do better at being more thoughtful, present,
available, generous, and aware. It’s a long list, but what matters more
than showing people you love that you can see them? All the time. Not just when you have time.
