I try to pay attention to an idea, concept, or word that keeps showing up from various sources. The word today has been “trust.” Trust the process, oneself, a partner; just trust. Inherent in the notion of trust is that of surrender and belief. It’s a good reminder—like when someone notices you’re holding your breath, but you haven’t realized yourself, and they say, “Breathe.” Once you hear it, it sounds so obvious, but somehow it’s easy to overlook or forget.
Gabriel Rico often works with taxidermy animals who seem to have consciously or inadvertently wandered into spaces to look at art. They look at sculptures made of neon, wire, and wood and seem perfectly at home both inside and in the company of art. Their demeanor conveys a sense of awareness, surrendering to the present, and trusting their curiosity. We can learn a lot from this intersection of art and nature.
