Responsibility

I want to be responsible to everyone and for everything I love, but I am not, and I can’t be. All I can do is listen and trust myself with the knowledge I have at that moment. This morning, I read that good decisions come from experience, and experience comes from making bad decisions. The complicated part is that we don’t always know which are which until we have benefitted from the passing of time. If, however, we believe everything is always exactly as it is supposed to be, then the volume of self-judgment can be turned down

I love early Mark Rothko paintings because, in them, we can see his efforts to find what he was seeking, to give form to what he knew he needed to share. They are the art equivalent of “coddiwompling”—moving with purposeful intention toward a vague destination. Each decision we make is an essential part of that journey. And there is no shirking of responsibility along the way.
