We can be in relation with people we know as well as people we have never met. Community in the modern age is amorphous: historically, it meant something else; today, we have far-reaching mediums to connect us (often beautifully, sometimes not). How we are currently able to reach and affect each other, share and unify, has become dimensional. And we can find power and beauty in the most simple of communal gestures.
Gabriel Orozco’s installation Home Run (1993), an arrangement of fresh oranges in the windows of the offices and apartments across from the sculpture garden in New York’s Museum of Modern Art on 54th Street, remains one of the most impactful pieces I have ever experienced. The concept was, in a way, super simple. The artist asked the building’s residents to put oranges on their windowsills. This collective action visually conveyed a sense of collaboration and unity. Small gestures joined together create great impact.
