Inverted

In yoga, I love doing headstands and handstands because the opportunity to be inverted allows the most literal change of perspective. I find being upside down profoundly productive. I notice things I wouldn’t have otherwise observed.

In his sculpture from 2002, Frank and Jamie, Maurizio Cattelan inverts two mannequins of New York City police officers, Frank and Jamie, and leans them against a wall. One has his arms crossed; the other has them at his side. One is clearly smiling; the other is tightlipped. Who recorded them? Who made the original mannequins? I included this piece in an exhibition I did for the Flag Art Foundation in New York, titled Funny. Certainly, the best works of art and the people whom I am most interested in allow a fluid, dynamic reading over time, an inverted perspective.
